OMG!!! This is bad.

April 27th, 2006

I was at Wal-Mart about a month ago (this is not the bad part) and I was shopping for food as part of my cook out more plan, and I saw this big box of Tilapia fillets. Frozen, individually wrapped, family pack. I bought it, fish is good for you right? So about a month goes by and I open the box, the fillets are not more than a 1/4 inch thick, I think how the hell do you cook these, the second you put them in the pan there burnt. I set some out in the refrig to thaw a few days ago, and decide to cook some tonight. Well I get to reading the package, they’re imported by the way, and of course there is Chinese writing on them, but I read the english part. The ingredients, are you ready:

Tilapia and Carbon Monoxide (to retain natural color)

I’m not shitting you, I took pic, See for yourself.
Fucked up Tilapia

Carbon Monoxide, car exhaust (among other things), it can kill you. People die all the time from this (West Virgina coal miners come to mind) . People use this to commit suicide. It is never good for you, and I’m supposed to eat it!! I really don’t know what to do, I think I should call the local news or tell Wal-Mart about this. Maybe it was translated into English wrong. But I’m not eating it, no way. What do you think I should do? I’m a little freaked out, this should not be anywhere near food much less in food. Damn!

Life Update

April 27th, 2006

Well, in the last post I explained how I am trying to be less of a drain on the world, recycling and what not. I kinda been trying to change every aspect of my life. I’ve been trying too eat better, cook my own food, been going pretty well. Still eat fast food for lunch at work most of the time. Just been trying to stop eating so much fried stuff (that’s a big thing for me). I have eliminated soda’s from my diet, last one I had was about mid January. Except for in alcoholic drinks, and the occasional energy drink when I stay out to late. Been taking vitamins and drinking the green tea every day. Of course since I don’t drink soda, so I turn to orange juice and soy milk, and water is always in there too. Been exercising almost every day, nothing big, just stretching and push ups and situps, a little weights too. Need to get some cardio type exercise going, like bike riding. It’s really not hard once you get into a rhythm. I’ve done this before and got lazy and gone back to my old ways, but this time it’s lasted a while, so we’ll see. I still indulge often, but at least I’m trying.

Compact Flourescents

April 23rd, 2006

Haven’t posted in a while, just haven’t been in the blogging mood, but feel like I’m letting my readers down ( all three of you). I’ve been a little obsessed with conserving energy lately, I’ve been reading alot about global warming, and feel a bit guilty actually. And it’s completely in my power to do something about it. Plus I just feel so wasteful, I’ve been feeling that way for a while now. I aspire to live off-the-grid, and I may be a long term goal, we’re talking years. What got it started was when I went to fast food joints and I pulled the straw wrapper off and threw it on the floorboard, after a while there was a big pile of wrappers. I thought what a waste of paper, how many millions of straw wrappers get thrown on the floor everyday. I still go out for fast food often. My reasoning is, well it’s paper it’ll biodegrade pretty quickly. But, I’ve been changing other aspects of my life, I’ve started a recycling, Plano has a pretty good recycling system, anything that is recycleble, Plano will come get it. Computers, grass clippings, chemicals.
I recently started changing my light bulbs over to Compact Fluorescents, they use way less power than incadescent bulbs.

For Example:
I have six light bulbs in my bathroom, four 60 watts above the sink and two 125 watts above the shower/toilet area, and I changed these over to Compact Fluorescents. Actually the four over the sink, I just use two bulbs now, I thought four was overkill. So let’s do the math:

Original set-up:
Four 60 watts________________________240 watts
Two 125 watts________________________250 watts
Total_______________________________490 watts

New set-up (with compact fluorescent)
Two 60 watt equivilent (uses 15 watts each)____30 watts
Two 90 watt equivilent (uses 26 watts each)____52 watts
total________________________________82 watts

490 watts to 82 watts just for changing out bulbs, they are more expensive though, but they do last for 5 to 7 years, and in my opinion they are brighter than their incadescent counterparts. They take about 2 minutes to reach full brightness also. Plus they save on the electric bill.

I’ll probably never live off grid, but a boy can dream can’t he.

Reverend organ drum

April 8th, 2006

Reverend organ drumWow, these guys apparently have a website now. I was just doing a search to see if they were playing soon, and stumbled upon it. Great blues band, a side project for Jim Heath of The Reverend Horton Heat. They only play 5 to 10 shows a year, and only in Dallas, but man there good. He’s joined by Tim Alexander (5 time grammy winner) from Asleep at the Wheel, who is now with Elvis T. Busboy. And the drummer is apparently Jim’s next door neighbor. I’ve seen them play twice now, and it’s a pretty good time, not more than maybe 10 to 15 people at the show, and they play older songs, tv theme songs, and some originals. Real bluesy, and a little slow, kinda like lounge music almost. Something you’d hear from a house band, but with a shit load more talent. Check out thier website Reverend Organ Drum, Hideaway is the best song they have for download, ten minutes long with a long drum solo in it, but the rest of the songs are good too. Also, according to the website, they have a cd in the works.
