Todd Snider restorer of faith

So I’ll try to recap the whole night. Well, me and Lindsay were the only ones going, that I knew, and after dinner on the patio at Friday’s, we headed to the show. It took place at The Sons of Hermann Hall, which is a nice venue, really old, like early 1900’s old, and has a lot of history. The Sons of Hermann is actually a German fraternal order that was started in New York by two german immigrants in 1840, and moved to Texas after that, and is the largest fraternal order that operates only in one state. It provides health insurance to it’s members, and the members also have to volunteer in various ways. And the hall is where they used to or still do meet, there is actually a bowling alley in the back, which is off limits to concert goers. Also, the entire operation there is run by volunteers, bartenders, cooks, ticket takers, are all volunteer. Pretty cool, actually.

The last time we saw Todd at this venue we got there at 8:30, the doors opened at 8, and the show was already going on and it was standing room only, so this time we got there early, about 7:45. The Sons is two story, with a bar on the bottom and the concert venue upstairs, but the bar is open to everyone, not just concert goers, so when we get there there is a crowd of about 100 mingling in the bar, playing pool, and shuffle board, or just hanging around drinking and talking. There was no real line and the concert area was roped off, so we just got a beer and stood around until something that looked like a show was about to start, happened. As we were standing there looking at the old Sons of Hermann paraphernalia, old photos and german bibles in a glass case, Lindsay yawns. “Are you tired” I say. “Not as tired as that guy” she says. I look over and there is a guy slumped over at a table, head about 3 inches from the table, had to much to drink maybe? Not 10 seconds after I look over at him he starts leaning and leaning and crashes onto the floor, tables and chairs go flying. He’s not drunk, somethings wrong. About ten people start to help/gather around him, including the bartender who remarks “Is it Bob?” as she passes by. I can’t really tell what’s wrong and don’t want to get in the way, but keep hearing the rumors from the start. “she’s doing mouth to mouth”, “he’s just drunk”, “I think he had a seizure”. All from people who weren’t even close to him. In the meantime, a line is forming for the show, and we go stand at the back. Right where the paramedics come in, they don’t seem to be in a hurry, and the firemen come in after them and one remarks something like “They let firemen in here”. He calls for a stretcher, and they wheel him out, obviously not life threatening.

So, we stand in line for a while, we got there at 7:45 and the doors opened at 9:00. Once we get in we get a seat about five rows back, one thing about Todd Snider shows at least in Texas, there is always seats in the front. I don’t know if he requests this or what. The place starts to fill up, but not near as full as his other shows, maybe less than 250 people, and the opening act comes out. Amanda Shires. She’s cute as a button, wearing a summer-ry dress with tits just about to fall out at any time, and she can’t bent over to far, so as not to see up her dress, and she tops it off with cowboy boots. Not that it’s slutty or she’s playing the “sex sells” angle, because she’s not dressed any different than most pretty girls from the country. Kind of a I’m just an innocent country girl, and she’s young obviously, maybe in her early twenties. But Damn! can she play the fiddle. A quick check of her myspace and she played with the Thrift Store Cowboys for a while and is just now venturing out as a solo artist, and she deserves it, she’s good. She was the opening act for the original Todd Snider date, and actually played even though Todd wasn’t there, and she drove all the way from Nashville for the show, about eleven hours straight. So she wasn’t even making enough money to make it worthwhile for her, she just was honoring her commitment. So the whole show folks where throwing money at her, putting it in her boots actually. She had a friend who accompanied her on guitar, just playing the basic chord changes, just to keep the song going because singing and playing fiddle isn’t easy. Overall I enjoyed it, so much so I bought her CD, and being the nice guy I am, and hearing the story about the road trip, I gave her $20 for her CD which was $15, and told her to keep the change. She insisted I take one of her buttons, that she made herself, from beer caps. She was selling them for three bucks, so I guess she got two extra bucks from me.

Now for Todd. He comes out from the back of the crowd, the stage at the Sons doesn’t have a backstage area. I think the backstage area is actually downstairs. Walks up on stage, everyone is cheering, grabs his guitar, takes his hat off and puts it on the guitar stand. Starts to walk toward the mic, and some lady in the front row starts to walk to the stage and up the stairs. The stage has three steps to the top including the stage, and she went to the second step. Todd gets this frightened look on his face and backs away putting his guitar down, and starts to walk offstage. The lady is saying something and Todd says “You’re just gonna ask me if I know someone”. Todd’s manager steps up and grabs the lady and says something about security (I can’t really hear all the conversation), then the owner of the bar grabs the lady from the back and starts taking her to the back, then her friends that were sitting with her follow them. One of them has a guitar with him, I assume the lady was asking Todd to sign the guitar. Todd gets back up to the mic and says plainly “That was rude”

He starts into Sideshow blues.

“I’m out in this tent with these freaks and musicians,
with that fucking freak and these musicians”

After that song he says, and I’m paraphrasing.

“I have to apologize for how the show started, I’ve only missed a few shows in my life and almost all of them have been flight delays. And two of them have happened in Dallas. So this time I told my wife ‘Fuck it we’re driving’. We left a few days early to make sure we got here on time, and we hired a lady to watch our house. On the way here, some lady tried to break into my house, and said she needed to talk to me. She kept asking where I was and where I was gonna be, and was gonna try to find me. So when that lady walked up, I was like fuck this I’m outta here. So I’m sorry for that. “

“Every show people come up to me and tell me that their brother or cousin knows a friend who knows me. Normally that’s the kind of thing you wait until after the show, jeez.”

After that he plays a great show, but there is this one guy. He was downstairs before the show and I’m pretty sure he was mentally challenged, he was walking around downstairs with a small Casio keyboard tucked under his chin playing songs for folks. I think he was trying to get some money, and every song, at least the ones I could hear, were the same. I thought he was from off the street just trying to make a few bucks in the bar. But he was at the show, he seemed to be enjoying it, maybe too much. He was clapping along to almost every song, not really that big a deal right, except his claps were a split second off the beat, not even in a steady beat in and of itself, and it was throwing Todd off. Bigtime. It was annoying me, and Todd was having a hard time playing, even at one point sighing and saying “Wow”. He tried to throw the guy off, changing the beat up mid song, giving a little pause right before the chorus came in, holding notes out a little longer. To no avail. Then he starts into one song and the guy is clapping by the second beat, and Todd stops and says, and I’m paraphrasing again.

“Ok, lets try something”

people start laughing, they know what’s going on.

“I want ya’ll to sing along with me if you know this song”

He starts playing America the beautiful, and everyone starts singing, once we get going he stops playing guitar, and keeps singing. Then he starts clapping, everyone else starts clapping too.

“Alright that’s good, I think we need to elect a clap coordinator”

After that the guy stops clapping for the most part. All in all it was a great show. I named this post “restorer of faith” because the last few times I’ve seen Todd he’s played the same show almost. If you have got the “live at Grimeys CD” , his shows were just like that, word for word, even the banter in between songs was the same. But this show was different, fresh stories and a new songs. Great stuff.

Shelved in the Music category | Only one comment so far

It’s go time
February 11th, 2007

Well it’s Todd Snider day, and this morning is the most pain I’ve been in since I’ve had Strep. I don’t know why, the swelling went down some, each side of my throat was about 3/4 of an inch swelled toward the center, and the big white patches are pretty much gone. I think that’s why it hurts so bad today, nothing but raw tissue under those spots. I would seriously trade this for a bad case of the flu, at least the flu is a dull pain.

Also, the cats ate half my herb garden last night, apparently. No more Tomatos, Jalapenos, or chives, I knew it was only a matter of time, and I’m to sick to replant right now. They ate the biggest ones to, they were already 3 to 4 inches tall. Suprisingly they ate none of the catnip.

But I’m not gonna miss Todd Snider, I probably won’t be able to talk over the noise, or drink anything but water, but I’ll be there. You may remember the post about Dallas making it difficult for folks to open up new clubs in Deep Ellum, now we may know why. It seems landlords down there a banding together to sell off large chunks of Deep Ellum, to be leveled and rebuilt into a hipper, arts-ier, trendier type of place with cafes, bookstores, and record shops, and tons of lofts. Here’s an excerpt from the unfairpark blog (click here for the full post):

…I’ve heard in recent weeks that many of the Deep Ellum landlords are banding together to pitch their properties as a collective whole to outside developers, one of whom’s situated in the Midwest (Chicago, so “they” say)…

…So, in short, here is what he imagines: Sidewalk cafes. Art galleries. Bookstores. Record shops. And above them all, rows and rows of lofts. (It sounds like a Sesame Street soundstage, kind of.)…

I guess you can’t stop progress, and no one seems to concerned about stopping it. I guess it’s good for the area, but it means less music venues.

Shelved in the Politics, Music category | No comments yet

He’s an alright guy.
February 3rd, 2007

Mark your calenders, Todd Snider is coming Feb. 11, to the Sons of Hermann Hall. Now we have heard two different answers about the parking from two different city officials. That being said, I AM GOING TO FIGHT LIKE HELL to get this resolved. I can only do so much, if you would like to help me please call the Mayor’s office and let them know that there is a REAL music scene in Dallas and you do not want Deep Ellum to die. Her is her office number: LAURA MILLER, Mayor of Dallas, Phone: (214) 670-4054 and ask for Norman Herrera or Laura Miller.

THANK YOU CITY OF DALLAS, YOU WIN!! WE GIVE UP! WE WILL NOT RE-OPEN THE ?TREES? BUILDING!

To whom this may concern, we have successfully filed our SUP for 2707-09 Elm Street, Deep Ellum. I personally spent over 2 days and over $1,300 filing for the SUP. Our SUP was accepted, and now we have to wait for the Dallas City Council to vote on it. That will take about 3 months; meanwhile we are paying rent on a building we cannot use.

BUT WAIT, THERE IS MORE!!!! THIS IS WHAT DID IT!!!

Of course, after we have spent the money with the city filing the SUP we are now told we need an SUP for the PARKING LOT.

David Cossum told us that under the new SUP law, we had to have 50 parking spaces. We only have 20. So we contracted with an independent parking lot owner to supply us 30 more spaces. We had planned on paying for the additional expense by charging to park in Deep Ellum, like everyone else does, even the City of Dallas.

Now we are told that we cannot charge for parking. So the 20 parking spaces we have, we cannot charge for, and we cannot charge for the contracted 30 remote parking spaces.

So the bottom line is this. We are being told that we need 50 parking spaces. We have 20 parking spaces, so we are renting the remote parking spaces for an additional $3,000 a month, and we will not be able to offset the expense because we can not charge to park. PLUS, we have to file another SUP for the Parking Lot and wait the 3 months for approval.

This makes this re-opening economically impossible. We are not a huge corporation; we are a small Mom/Pop business.

Well, City of Dallas, you did it. We are planning on not going forward with re-opening the ?Trees? building. I guess we will look at a city that cares about its citizens and the local music scene. Good luck.

P.S. ATTN: City of Dallas! How come you can charge to park, but we cannot. ALSO THIS IS A WARNING TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO OPEN A ?LIVE MUSIC VENUE? IN DEEP ELLUM, THAT IS NOT A CHURCH. DON?T DO IT. THE CITY OF DALLAS WILL NOT LET YOU!!

Thank you for your time,

Kenny Brattain Owner Fat Daddy?s Sound Shack http://www.fatdaddyssoundshack.com

If you want to try and stop the city, I guess all you can do is call the Mayor. LAURA MILLER, Mayor of Dallas, Phone: (214) 670-4054.

This sucks! Trees was my favorite venue down there. It doesn’t make sense really, I mean they have 50 parking places, but Trees holds a good 1000 people. The people that don’t get those first 50 spaces are gonna have to park and pay for city parking, either at a parking meter or in a city parking lot. Seems like a win win situation for the city of Dallas. We already let Dallas tear down a landmark (the deep ellum tunnel) to build a dart light rail station, to bring more people into deep ellum. It’s not gonna work if there’s no place to go. Dallas is really bassackwards in the way they think. A few years ago they were gonna “revitalize downtown” and bring residents and businesses in, but seem to let the ball down sometimes. I mean they let the Dallas Cowboys build in Arlington, they still haven’t revamped the Cotton bowl and the Texas vs. OU game could go away. The west end marketplace shutdown. I guess they have to save up for the trinity river project. A huge entertainment complex built in a flood plain. That floods fairly often I might add. The american airlines center is the only big thing going on down there. There are a couple of bigger venues opening up soon down there, but the are owned by national companies, like the House of Blues. Which is ok I guess, but I’d rather go to a small independently owned venue.

Shelved in the Music category | No comments yet

Bad timing
August 11th, 2006

I’ve been listening to the Todd Snider CD, and decided today to check out Todd’s website, and he’s playing here on the Friday I fly to Portland. I didn’t want to go that bad but I always drag Roger to see obscure local bands, and he really wanted to go, so I went along. Jared, Josh, Ali and Kathy also went. PowerMan 5000 had a hit song back in the nineties called This is what it’s like when worlds collide, the lead singer is also Rob Zombie’s brother. It’s got to be a wierd feeling to play huge stadiums, and then play a small club, I mean there weren’t more than 100 people there. They still were good, although a Austin band called Powderburn opened for them and I thought they were much better. I met up with everyone at Jared’s house, and Roger was obviously very drunk (Josh has video, post it on Youtube I dare you). Anyway that was entertaining and annoying at the same time. Roger doesn’t remember any of the ride down there, the concert, or waffle house afterwords. So basically he paid $17 to see a band that he only knows one song from, and only the chorus at that, and he doesn’t even remember. We did score some free Jagermister swag, a shirt and a lanyard keychain thingy. All in all a good time.

Shelved in the Music category | 2 comments

Reverend organ drum
April 8th, 2006

Wow, these guys apparently have a website now. I was just doing a search to see if they were playing soon, and stumbled upon it. Great blues band, a side project for Jim Heath of The Reverend Horton Heat. They only play 5 to 10 shows a year, and only in Dallas, but man there good. He’s joined by Tim Alexander (5 time grammy winner) from Asleep at the Wheel, who is now with Elvis T. Busboy. And the drummer is apparently Jim’s next door neighbor. I’ve seen them play twice now, and it’s a pretty good time, not more than maybe 10 to 15 people at the show, and they play older songs, tv theme songs, and some originals. Real bluesy, and a little slow, kinda like lounge music almost. Something you’d hear from a house band, but with a shit load more talent. Check out thier website Reverend Organ Drum, Hideaway is the best song they have for download, ten minutes long with a long drum solo in it, but the rest of the songs are good too. Also, according to the website, they have a cd in the works.

Shelved in the Music category | No comments yet

Nashville Pussy!
February 9th, 2006

Went to see Nashville Pussy last Monday in Denton, and they were incredible. Roger was nice enough to come with me and it just happened to be his sister’s birthday, and she lives in Denton, so we stopped by her house first. Her and her friend decided to come with us but only stayed for the first band, even after we paid for them to get in, 15 bucks a piece, wtf? But she’s a poor college kid who could barely afford to get in the club anyway, so cheap beer at the house appealed more to her. Anyway, it was Hailey’s club they were playing at and was worth the 45 minute drive from Dallas. Max Cady opened up, and they weren’t anything special, then Honkey took the stage, great band from Austin, a must see again, similar to Nashville pussy in sound, and energy. Then came Nashville Pussy, this was the 3rd time I’ve seen them, and had to be the loudest I’ve seen them, my ears were ringing a full 18 hours later. Very low turn out, but it was in Denton, and it was a Monday night, but the thing about NP is always put an a good show. Ruyter Suys is one of the best guitarists in rock and roll, she’s unbelievable. She’s very active on stage, one of those guitarists that can just play no matter what, wheather she’s on top of the speaker stack, or the shoulders of the bouncer (both of which she did). Crazy technical solos while jumping around, I don’t see how she can play without even looking down at the guitar. She always strips some part of her clothing off thru the show, sometimes even getting down to her bra and panties, but this night she just took off the shirt. Then at the end of the show she was down on her back going crazy, and ripped every string off her guitar one by one. It was a very late night, but well worth it, I picked up their new CD. We didn’t get home until 2:30, remember we had a 45 minute drive home, and I still made it to work at 7:30.

Shelved in the Music category | Only one comment so far

Blue Language
December 6th, 2005

My great friend Tommy and his friends recorded a live CD and it’s for sale now.

Email from Tom:

It’s finally here: Blue Language, the two-disc live album featuring performances by me, Dan Kimbro, and John Henry.

Sorry for the spam, but this is probably the coolest thing I’ll ever do, so I’m telling everybody who’ll listen.

The album was recorded live at a one-of-a-kind performance in the Chapel at Reed College, April 2nd, 2005. If you were there, you probably remember us drunkenly and sloppily goofing around onstage, but if you weren’t there, let me tell you, this was the most sophisticated and flawless performance ever to be captured on audio recording.

This is the first ever recording of most of my songs, and Dan’s as well. John Henry’s are on other albums with his band the Jigsaw Gentlemen (www.jigsawgentlemen.com), but the songs in this recording have a very different sound as a solo performance. If you haven’t heard Dan or John before, Dan plays hilarious adult-themed bluegrass or “porn-country” songs, and John Henry plays darker, more rockin’ songs with intelligent lyrics, delivered with a golden voice. I’ve got 10 of the 28 songs, including all the old favorites, and 2 brand new songs, premiered on this recording.

The album is entirely self-produced, so sadly, we can’t just give ‘em away. We ended up with 31 tracks on 2 discs, nearly 2 hours of music, and we are selling them for $10. You out-of-Portlanders can buy them online at http://cdbaby.com/cd/tomdanjohn (or just go to cdbaby and search for our names) their handling fee and shipping will be a few bucks extra, but you can pay with a credit card, and delivery is guaranteed.

We made exactly 200 and we already dropped one and broke it. So now there’s only 199. Get ‘em while the gettin’s good.

Lemme know what you think, and please forward this e-mail to anybody else who gives a damn.

-Tom

Buy his CD here and help support him.
