Ubuntu Linux

Linux for human beings, that’s their tag line. It’s been around for a while and I heard about it about four months ago, and had it dual booted with XP, but finally switched full time about a week ago. I think I like it better, it can do everything windows can do and most times better, it can even run some windows programs if you need them. I don’t use many windows only programs anyway, and I’ve always been a fan of open source software. I bought the official book and recommend it if you’re thinking of switching, because it’s a little different at first, but easy to get used to and there’s tons of support on the net. It comes with a ton of features right out of the box, like Open Office, Gimp shop, Firefox, Gaim, VoIP, plus more. With thousands of other apps ready for download, like Automatix2, you’ll need that right off the bat if you want to view any videos online.

Window was giving me trouble, I kept getting the “blue screen of death” and I reinstalled it, then the other day I couldn’t connect with firefox or Internet expolorer, but my anti-virus and instant messenger would connect, strange. So, since I had already been using Ubuntu I just went to it full time. It’s cinch to install, and you can even run it off the disc if you just want to try it out. I suggest buying the official Ubuntu book and it comes with the disc. I have to give props to all the Linux coders out there, it use to be if you used Linux you had to know how to code it, but now they’ve made it to where it resembles Windows almost to a tee, but better. Linux for…well for human beings, just like they say. It’s free, it’s secure what more could you want.

Shelved in the Trying new things, Cool shit category | Only one comment so far

Herb Garden.
February 3rd, 2007

I started a herb garden, and it’s sprouting! I got me some basil, rosemary, mint (2 kinds), oregano, chives, catnip (for the cats), lavender (just for the hell of it, good in tea though). Also planted some tomatos and jalapenos. I have a nice sunny window so they should prosper, the herbs will probably remain indoors most of the time, it’s too cold to out them outside now. I just hope I can keep the cats from devouring them, every other plant I’ve tried to grow gets eaten right away. Plus, the dog may eat them if I put them outside, so we’ll see how it goes. I’d post pic of it, but there’s not much there now, maybe when they are bigger.

Shelved in the Trying new things, Fade to green category | Only one comment so far

Tandoor
August 8th, 2006

Tandoor was the place I ate tonight. So I had the teriyaki bowl with steak, basically a bowl with rice, steamed veggies, and steak covered with teriyaki sauce. It was quite tasty. Quite a few other tasty thing on the menu so I’ll be back. The guy that runs it was pretty cool too. Fast food is so easy, I’ve been eating it for lunch and dinner for the last few weeks. It’s not good for me and it’s costing me alot, like ten bucks a day. So I’m going to try something new this week. I’m gonna try to eat at places not fast food or corporate chain type places. Also, I’m going to try to eat at places that I can get to on my bike. I have some places in mind, but I’ll save that for later. Rode my bike for about 40 mins today. Just bought a new mountain bike last weekend, with intent to ride it often. I headed out on the Chisolm trail (the bike trail in Plano, not the cattle drive) and it was farther than I thought just to get to it, but kept going, got to it, and kept going more. I wasn’t even really that tired, but was at a slower pace towards the end. It’s great, you notice so much more around you when riding, knick-knacks in peoples yards, ducks, flowers, kinda like your own little adventure. On the way home I ended up stopping by Firehouse Subs, a new sub eatery that just opened, and got some dinner. I’ll be sore in the morning.

Shelved in the Good times, Trying new things, Cool shit category | No comments yet

Mmm…Steam beer bread!
June 14th, 2006

My sister gave me some beer bread mix for Christmas (It even came in a 16 oz. beer bottle!) and I just got around to making some bread. I kinda been trying to change every aspect of my life. I’ve been trying too eat better, cook my own food, been going pretty well. Still eat fast food for lunch at work most of the time. Just been trying to stop eating so much fried stuff (that’s a big thing for me). I have eliminated soda’s from my diet, last one I had was about mid January. Except for in alcoholic drinks, and the occasional energy drink when I stay out to late. Been taking vitamins and drinking the green tea every day. Of course since I don’t drink soda, so I turn to orange juice and soy milk, and water is always in there too. Been exercising almost every day, nothing big, just stretching and push ups and situps, a little weights too. Need to get some cardio type exercise going, like bike riding. It’s really not hard once you get into a rhythm. I’ve done this before and got lazy and gone back to my old ways, but this time it’s lasted a while, so we’ll see. I still indulge often, but at least I’m trying.

Shelved in the General, Trying new things category | No comments yet

Pluckers.
November 21st, 2005

Went out with Nicole Friday night and decided to try a new place to eat, so we went to Pluckers on lower Greenville. Just your basic wing joint, but they had a few interesting things I wanted to try like fried Macoroni and cheese, and Dr. Pepper wing sauce. The Macoroni wasn’t great but wasn’t bad, basically just a small rectangular “cake” of macoroni with batter around it. We didn’t get the Dr. Pepper wing sauce on our wings, but the waitress was nice enough to bring us a couple wings with the sauce on it. I wasn’t bad actually, I thought it would taste like the Jack Daniels sauce they have at Fridays, and that’s kinda what it tasted like, except they added something to make it alittle spicy. Stayed there for a few beers, and Nicole presented me with a card, just a quick note, I won’t repeat what it said, but it was sweet.

After that we decided to head up the street to Ben’s Half Yard House for some more drinks. Nicole and I used to hang out at this place all the time, so it was like the good old days, we even sat at the same table! It was the usual fare, Jack and Cokes for Nic, Guinness pints for me, and good conversation. This was the first time in a while that I’ve got to hang out with her without any other friends around, so we got to have a really good talk. As I mentioned in a previous post, I didn’t know if I was still at best friend status, but I was reassured that I was very much so. Which made my day!

The night countinued back at my house, where there was wine and more good converation, until about four in the morning, wow! I don’t think Nicole gets the credit she deserves sometimes, she’s such a remarkable person, I can’t believe I know someone like her, it’s a blessing. Hopefully I’ll see her again soon.

Shelved in the Trying new things category | 2 comments

<!-- Author information is disabled per default.
