FMS

February 6th, 2008

I’ve been dabbling in R/C planes lately and while the plane I bought I’ve only flown a few times, I guess it’s a new hobby. Problem is the plane I have is hard to fly if the winds are over about 5 mph, and I try to fly when there is no wind at all. So flying days are few and far between. So I bought this. Basically a USB R/C plane controller that comes with an open source R/C simulator program. Seems to help a lot with orientation, which is good since some of the controls are reversed when the plane is flying towards you. Lots of extra planes for download on the net if you search google. FMS can be downloaded for free and used with the keyboard for controls, I found that very hard though.

Linux for human beings, that’s their tag line. It’s been around for a while and I heard about it about four months ago, and had it dual booted with XP, but finally switched full time about a week ago. I think I like it better, it can do everything windows can do and most times better, it can even run some windows programs if you need them. I don’t use many windows only programs anyway, and I’ve always been a fan of open source software. I bought the official book and recommend it if you’re thinking of switching, because it’s a little different at first, but easy to get used to and there’s tons of support on the net. It comes with a ton of features right out of the box, like Open Office, Gimp shop, Firefox, Gaim, VoIP, plus more. With thousands of other apps ready for download, like Automatix2, you’ll need that right off the bat if you want to view any videos online.

Window was giving me trouble, I kept getting the “blue screen of death” and I reinstalled it, then the other day I couldn’t connect with firefox or Internet expolorer, but my anti-virus and instant messenger would connect, strange. So, since I had already been using Ubuntu I just went to it full time. It’s cinch to install, and you can even run it off the disc if you just want to try it out. I suggest buying the official Ubuntu book and it comes with the disc. I have to give props to all the Linux coders out there, it use to be if you used Linux you had to know how to code it, but now they’ve made it to where it resembles Windows almost to a tee, but better. Linux for…well for human beings, just like they say. It’s free, it’s secure what more could you want.

Shelved in the Trying new things, Cool shit category | Only one comment so far

Shift Happens.
April 8th, 2007

Really interesting video I saw a few weeks ago. I don’t know much about converting videos to other formats, so it’s the best I can do for now. It may take a while to download maybe two minutes, but you can save it to your PC if you plan on watching it more than once. That way you don’t have to wait every time. All you need to do is bypass the freezer’s internal thermostat with one set at a higher temp (around 40 degrees). It’s efficient because cold air is heavier than warm air, and it settles naturally into the freezer cavity. Very little is lost when you open the lid. I bought a secondhand, 8-cu.-ft. Vestfrost freezer for $200 and installed an external thermostat (at left) purchased from a home-brewing supply Web site. Turns out, home brewers have been pulling this trick for years because chest fridges allow them to ferment their goods in kegs at the ideal temp. The upshot? Our Vestfrost fridge draws a mere 1/8 kilowatt-hour per day–a pittance compared to our conventional fridge.

This is from Popular Mechanics magazine, they have a family living off grid that they are following. They’re hoping to put it into production and cater to the high end market for around $150,000. They could be on to something, a car that looks cool, is faster than any production car out there, and has no emissions, I’d buy it. Only draw back is the 150 mile range and the charge time, but technology will eventually fix that. Tesla motors is also working on a electric car built on a Lotus Exige chassis, I want one.

Shelved in the Cool shit category | No comments yet

Winamp 5.21
March 10th, 2006

Winamp 5.21 just out, and now syncs with Ipods, Creative, and Microsoft Play for Sure music players, sweet! I just got all my cd’s ripped to my PC and use winamp to manage/ play them, so makes it super easy, you can’t transfer playlists yet but they are working on it. But song, albums , or artists will transfer just fine. Oh, and it’s free, go download it!
